Beautifully Messy Ministry

Is it a full moon?

Was there no school this week?

Was there a holiday that involved candy recently?

These are the kinds of questions people in children’s ministry often ask on Sunday mornings.

Sometimes, everything runs smoothly. The kids listen to the story, share precious prayer requests, and complete the craft perfectly. Other weeks… you’re just trying to keep things from turning into a full-on wrestling match.

Like I’ve said in past blogs, this is a place I never saw myself serving. But now that I’m here, I can honestly say it’s a beautifully messy ministry. I’m witnessing growth and change in these kids that truly melts my heart.

There are moments when a child who once felt like a “lone wild one” begins to engage. Or when a child who could never sit still starts asking thoughtful questions. In those moments, I realize something powerful—this ministry is shaping my heart just as much as it’s shaping theirs.

Children’s ministry is messy, tiring, and loud—so very loud. But it is also full of beautiful, blossoming souls that I pray for daily.

I’m beginning to understand more deeply why Jesus told His disciples to let the children come to Him. This season of life is unlike any other. Children are teachable, loving, and full of enthusiasm. But they need older Christians to guide them, pour into them, and walk alongside them.

So, fellow believer, if you haven’t found your place to serve yet… maybe this is it.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” — Matthew 19:14
